Elizabeth has been working in the theatre in the U.K. since the 1970s. She trained at the Elmhurst Ballet School, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and later at the City of Leeds College of Music, in opera. She was awarded her L.T.C.L., in 1984.

As an actress and singer, during the 30 years of her career, she has played many leading roles in regional theatres and in London’s West End. She has also worked in TV and film, and has acted and sung in over a hundred radio dramas for the BBC.

She won TIME OUT’s ‘Best Actress’ for her performance in BREAKER’S YARD, at the I.C.A., before moving north to work for five years with the Red Ladder Theatre, a collectively run company that made new work, always with music and song, touring to non-theatrical venues all over the UK. She performed, co-wrote and directed productions.
Her collaboration with Steve Trafford, begun in Red Ladder, continued with their music theatre piece, MARIE, about the British Music Hall artist Marie Lloyd. Written for her by Trafford, they co-produced MARIE at the Fortune Theatre, in London. MARIE also toured to the USA, and to Norway, and twice nationally in the U.K. In 1996, for this role, she won an Olivier Award nomination as ‘Best actress in a Musical’, also in the London Theatre Critics’ Awards, and for the radio adaptation of MARIE, ‘Best actress’, in the Sony Radio Awards.

Her next collaboration with Trafford was HYMN TO LOVE, a music theatre piece about Edith Piaf, which was produced at the Mercury Theatre, Colchester, ran twice in London at the Drill Hall, and was at Traverse One for the 1998 Edinburgh Festival. It was also adapted as a radio piece for BBC Radio 3
